Chandigarh: The bus strike scheduled for August 27 in Punjab has been postponed. This decision has come as a big relief to thousands of passengers of Punjab before the festival of Raksha Bandhan. Now bus services in Punjab will not be affected on August 27 and passengers will be able to travel by buses of PRTC, PUNBUS and Punjab Roadways.
The Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers Union held talks with the government regarding the bus strike. The union representatives held an important meeting with Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. During the meeting, the demands and other issues related to the workers were discussed. After the meeting, the union decided to postpone the proposed strike of August 27.
The possibility of bus service being stopped due to the approaching festival of Raksha Bandhan was creating concern among the passengers. On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, a large number of people travel from one city to another to meet their family members. Especially sisters travel to their brothers’ houses to tie Raksha Bandhan. At such a time, people could have faced a lot of difficulties due to the closure of public transport.
Postponement of the strike will facilitate people travelling from different cities and villages of Punjab. PRTC and PUNBUS buses connect many areas of Punjab. Students, laborers, employees and general passengers have a huge dependence on these bus services. Therefore, the postponement of the strike is being seen as a significant relief for the passengers.
The union has been raising issues with the government before regarding its demands. Talks have been going on between the government and employee organizations regarding the demands of contract employees and their service-related problems. After the latest meeting, it has been decided to postpone the strike for now.
